Every year, the ALS Association DC/MD/VA ALS Chapter serves 900 patients diagnosed with ALS and their families. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we support 10 ALS clinics that offer over 2,000 comprehensive patient visits, provide over 800 pieces of durable medical equipment and assistive technology devices to individuals living with ALS, and facilitate over 100 support group meetings for individuals, families, caregivers.
ALS is an always fatal neurodegenerative disease in which a person's brain loses connection with the muscles. People with ALS lose their ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe. There is no known cure or effective treatment for this disease and the life expectancy of a patient is 2-5 years after diagnosis.
